As it is the last day of 2018 I decided it was probably time to do a wrap up post for all the challenges I've participated in this year. As usual, I overestimated a bit on how many challenges I would manage to participate in, so I didn't accomplish the goals in all of them. Regardless, I still had a fun reading year and here's my lists. As part of both Foodies Read Challenge and Literary Voyage Around the World (Mexico), I ended up reading Frida's Fiestas by Marie-Pierre Colle, Guadalupe Rivera and others. Today I'll post my review. Full-color photographs. My Thoughts on the Book It was fun and interesting going through the pages, as Frida Kahlo is a pretty iconic artist. One can learn a lot about a country and a person when it comes to food and one does so in this book. If one is interested in either art or food, feel free to pick up Frida's Fiestas.

Considering I have my own world literature project in addition to participating in Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge, I ended up reading Faceless by Amma Darko, who happens to come from Ghana. Description from Goodreads Street life in the slums of Accra is realistically portrayed in this socially-commited, subtle novel about four educated women who are inspired by the plight of a 14-year old girl, Fofo. As the main characters convert their library center into a practical street initiative, the novel invokes the squalor, health risks, and vicious cycles of poverty and violence that drive children to the streets and women to prostitution; and, from which, ultimately, no one in the society is free. My Thoughts on the Novel Faceless is a thought provoking novel about gender, class and poverty in Ghana and acts as a social commentary on the status of women and children. For en stund tilbake var jeg såpass heldig at jeg fikk tilsendt et leseeksemplar av romanen Menssmerter av Kopano Matlwa fra forlaget. Jeg fant fort ut at jeg kunne bruke den i forbindelse med både land i verden prosjektet mitt, samt Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge og i dag kommer omtalen av boka. In search for more books to both the Cloak and Dagger Mystery Challenge and Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge, I ended up reading One Blood by Graeme Kent, where the setting is at the Solomon Islands. Description from Goodreads Sister Conchita has assumed reluctant command of a run-down mission in the Solomon Islands. The group of three elderly sisters currently there are rumoured to have 'gone native', and Conchita tries to grapple with these eccentric insurgents and the secrets they are keeping when an American tourist is murdered in their mission. My Thoughts on the Book It was fun revisiting Sister Conchita and Seargent Kella (I've read Devil-Devil earlier) and I love how the author indirectly points out some of the issues with colonialism. In addition, this story has several layers to it, so it's not like it turns out to be a bland storyline.

I had both Literary Voyage Around The World Reading Challenge and my very own world literature in the back of my mind when I picked up The Girl from the Coast by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who happens to be from Indonesia. Today I'll post the review of the novel. For noen måneder siden var jeg såpass heldig at jeg fikk tilsendt et leseeksemplar av boka Den polske bokseren av Eduardo Halfon fra forlaget. I og med at boka passet til både Land i verden-prosjektet mitt (Guatemala), samt Literary Voyage Around The World Reading Challenge, har jeg til slutt lest den og i dag kommer omtalen av boka. Boka passet til både Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge og Cloak and Dagger Mystery Challenge og i dag kommer omtalen av romanen. As I'm participating in Platypire Diversity Challenge and Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge (Iran), I figured out it was time to read Persepolis - The Story of a Childhood and The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi. Today I'll post my review. In relation to Platypire Diversity Challenge (Hispanic History Month), I ended up reading the poetry collection Love Poems by Pablo Neruda and today I'll post my review of it. With both Literary Voyage Around the World Challenge (Angola) and Library Love Challenge in the back of my mind, I ended up borrowing The Book of Chameleons by José Eduardo Agualusa at the library. My Thoughts on the Book The Book of Chameleons is a quirky little book, but quite enjoyable. Even if the book is a quick read, it also has a bit of depth.

I forbindelse med Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge (Færøyene), samt Cloak and Dagger Mystery Challenge, endte jeg opp med å lese krimromanen Blid er sommarnatta av Jógvan Isaksen. I dag kommer omtalen av boka. Beskrivelse fra forlaget Journalist Sonja Pætursdóttir blir funnen død ved foten av Stødlafjall. Politiet meiner det er eit uhell, men journalisten Hannis Martinsson, er ikkje så sikker. Da han kort etter finn Sonjas nære venn død, er han overtydd om at det er ein samanheng mellom dei to dødsfalla. Blid er sommarnatta er til nå kommen på dansk, islandsk, tysk, engelsk, og er også kjøpt for utgjeving på fransk og ungarsk. Jógvan Isaksen er mag. art. i nordisk litteratur, sidan 1986 lektor ved Københavns Universitet. Mangeårig forlagsredaktør og prisvinnande forfattar. In search of books suitable for Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge, I ended up reading The Tinderbox by Hans Christian Andersen (Denmark) and today I'll post the review. Description from Goodreads 'There sat the dog with eyes as big as mill wheels' Though criticised for their anarchic immorality when first published, Hans Christian Andersen's tales made him an international star, taken to the hearts of children and adults for their beauty, sorrow and strangeness. Included here are 'The Steadfast Tin Soldier' and 'Big Klaus and Little Klaus'. My Thoughts On The Book Considering that I grew up with several of H. C. Andersen's fairy tales, I really enjoyed reading The Tinderbox, particularly as a couple of my favourite fairy tales were in it, such as The Steadfast Tin Soldier. This little collection works great as an introduction to Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, for those who are interested.

I forbindelse med Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge, endte jeg opp med å bla i strikkeboka Latviske vottar av Maruta Grasmane, og i dag kommer omtalen av boka. Beskrivelse fra forlaget 178 tradisjonsmønster frå Latvia - populære strikkevottar frå ein rik tradisjon! Latvia har ein fargerik og vakker strikketradisjon, og landet er særleg kjent for den rike vottetradisjonen. Tidlegare var det vanleg at dei latviske kvinnene strikka vottar til brudekistene. Etter tradisjonen kunne ingen vottar vere like. Derfor finst det i dag nærast tallause mønster og variasjonar. Denne boka syner den latviske vottetradisjonen frå 1700-talet og fram til i dag. Kvar region i Latvia har sine spesielle variantar. Her får du mønster på vottar frå alle dei ulike regionane. Vottane er strikka med tynne pinnar og tynt garn, noko som gir plass til mykje mønster på kvar vott. Her er det vottar for den som likar det enkelt og klassisk med få fargar, men òg fargerike variantar i uventa kombi...

(Inneholder affiliate linker) Med Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge i bakhodet, endte jeg opp med å lese  Det litterære apotek  av tyske Nina George. I dag kommer omtalen av romanen. Beskrivelse fra forlaget Jean Perdu er en bokhandler av det helt spesielle slaget. Han vet nøyaktig hva slags bok som skal til for å kurere oss som lider av diverse sjelekvaler, og derfor kaller han bokbåten sin ved Seinen for Det litterære apotek. Det er bare én person han ikke klarer å kurere: seg selv. Jean Perdu sørger fortsatt over sin tapte kjærlighet, den vakre Manon fra Provence, som forlot ham for 21 år siden. Hun etterlot seg bare et brev, et brev Perdu aldri har fått seg til å åpne. Ikke før nå, denne sommeren da alt kommer til å forandre seg. Endelig tør bokhandleren å kaste loss, og han legger ut på en reise oppover kanalene, mot hjertet av Provence. Med seg på reisen har han en ung og frustrert bestselgerforfatter som ikke greier å komme i gang med bok nummer...

I dag kommer omtalen av romanen. Beskrivelse fra forlaget Om ondskap, familier og årsaker til å drepe. Matthew Cave er en dansk journalist i slutten av tjueårene. Han har mistet livsgnisten etter at hans samboer og deres ufødte barn døde i en trafikkulykke. Flukten fra virkeligheten har drevet ham til Nuuk, Grønland. Det eneste sporet han har etter sin amerikanske far, er et tjue år gammelt postkort, som faren sendte fra Thulebasen før han forsvant. Matthew har fått jobb i den lokale avisen, og blir sendt til kanten av innlandsisen for å dekke oppdagelsen av en mumifisert viking. Alt tyder på en verdenssensasjon, og det lille samfunnet holder pusten av spenning. Men kaoset bryter løs da mumi...

(Inneholder affiliate linker) Tatt i betraktning at jeg er interessert i andre verdenskrig, endte jeg opp med å lese boka  Fangene som forsvant - NSB og slavearbeiderne på Nordlandsbanen  av Bjørn Westlie. I tillegg kan jeg bruke boka i forbindelse med Literary Voyage Around The World Reading Challenge og i dag kommer omtalen av boka. Beskrivelse fra forlaget Nærmere 100 000 sovjetiske krigsfanger var slaver i Norge under krigen. Rundt 13 000 av dem var med på å bygge Nordlandsbanen. På den 14 mil lange strekningen fra Mo i Rana til Fauske samarbeidet Norges Statsbaner (NSB) med de tyske okkupantene.  I Fangene som forsvant forteller Bjørn Westlie den brutale historien om NSBs utnyttelse av de sovjetiske slavearbeiderne, der tusenvis av fanger døde - for siden å bli glemt.  Etter krigen ble fangenes skjebne knapt omtalt i NSBs egen historie og minnene etter dem ble utslettet.
